Ahí la cosa cambiaba y, en vez de andar renegando, te habría preguntado más y me habría enterado más sobre los "guamachucos" y su herencia arqueológica, la más grande de la sierra norte del Perú. Pero todo comenzó mal y te hablé poco durante el trayecto de casi 10 kilómetros que separa el actual pueblo de Huamachuco, con la meseta donde los antiguos erigieron su pétreo legado. Llegamos. Me separé de ti y empecé a recorrer el complejo sin tu compañía. No quería escuchar palabras mientras contemplaba los grandes muros, los recintos, el entorno geográfico. Cómo no serlo si uno de ellos es Kuélap. La fortaleza de los shashapuyos con sus inmensas y altísimas paredes, con sus casas circulares, con sus escaleras estrechas que fueron trampas mortales para los invasores incaicos, sí, porque ellos sitiaron durante meses a los beligerantes pobladores de esta tierra de selva montañosa, en la región Amazonas. Kuélap, en verdad, no se parece a la máxima joya del Tahuantinsuyo, como tampoco se le parece Rúpac, el llamado Machu Picchu de la sierra de Lima. Allí se llega caminando, subiendo a uno de los tantos cerros de la sierra huaralina. Es un trayecto pesado que algunos emprenden en la localidad de La Florida y otros, para ahorrarse unos cuantos kilómetros de andar, lo inician desde el desolado pueblo de Pampas. 

Edificios de piedra y una vista impresionante de los que fueron los dominios de los atavillos, una cultura antigua, anterior al florecimiento cusqueño que predominó en esas zonas montañosas que, en el Perú actual, son parte la región Lima Provincias; entonces, lo de Machu Picchu es solo un capricho o acaso es que todos queremos tener un Machu Picchu cerca, para sentirnos orgullosos. Y sí, lo recorreré en silencio, como intento hacerlo siempre que estoy en Machu Picchu, el de verdad, los de mentira.
